There is not a single VALID reason why Elizabeth May should not be in the next Leaders' debates - and yet Jack Layton refuses to lend his support, driving ever more of his disenchanted supporters to the Greens.
But in all fairness to Mr.Layton, can you blame him ? Elizabeth May could prove to be the final nail in the coffin for a party who's demise looms ever larger with the Great Green wave of support now washing over Canada.
When you have both the Greatest Living Canadian and His Holiness the Dalai Lama breaking decades of political silence to come out publicly with enthusiastic support for the Green Party, you know you have momentum. And in politics, nothing succeeds like success.
And when you have a local NDP candidate trotting out the 2006 platform as proof of the party's environmentalism in 2008, you know you have a party who's green stance is literally paper-thin, a fact increasingly recognized by the conscientious voters of Westmout Ville Marie.
Currently in the Guelph, Ontario by-election, the Green Candidate Mike Nagy is running circles around the NDP polling TRIPLE the support of the former CBC radio host "Star" candidate for the NDP.
Might this have anything to do with Mr.Layton's cowardly stance ?
Here in Westmount, having dominated the debates, earned the attention of the media and the respect of voters who care, it is thrilling to watch the same pattern take shape and welcome new supporters to our ranks from across the political spectrum. And with Elizabeth May's profile skyrocketing, one can easily imagine the Guelph scenario unfolding here over the course of the looming general election.
